Our Nature-Based Play Space

Thoughtfully designed to nurture kind, resilient, independent, thoughtful children, and fostering a deep connection to nature while supporting each child’s developmental needs through purposeful, play-based experiences.

Natural materials, grass, rocks, and layered plantings create the feeling of bushland within our Early Learning play space. The environment invites imagination, movement and exploration, encouraging children to connect deeply with the natural world around them.

Each element of the space reflects the many ways children move, imagine and learn together. Co-designed by our educators and children in collaboration with Wearthy – experts in outdoor education, design and early childhood development – the play space offers varied opportunities for collaboration, creativity and challenge.

Thoughtfully scaled features provide developmentally appropriate adventure for babies, toddlers and Kindy children alike. Even our youngest learners are invited into safe, sensory-rich exploration with a dedicated baby space that has an open cubby and gentle waterplay. Gradual challenges and thoughtfully scaled features mean babies, toddlers, and Kindy children each find adventures that offer an appropriate challenge as they learn from each other and their educators, and in turn, their confidence grows.

Stepping into the Brisbane Adventist Early Learning play space feels like walking into nature. In a single day, a child might:

  • cross "fallen logs" and conquer hills and survey their surroundings as they navigate the timber fort of our mixed-challenge play structure
  • discover hidden treasures, and taste-test edibles from the "kitchen garden" in our raised vegetable planters and fruit trees
  • get their hands dirty in the mud kitchen, water play, and other sensory exploration areas
  • recharge with contemplative moments in the yarning circle or under the shade trees
  • go for big moves and big energy on the soft green lawn of our open spaces

It is grounded in the Three Pillars of the Ecology of Play™, which recognises that – like a seed needs sun, soil, and water – children also need these three essential elements to truly flourish.

Our play environment provides opportunities for unstructured time, allowing children to explore, create, and immerse themselves in play.

The environment also honours the child's freedom to choose – supporting independent decision-making, problem-solving, and the confidence that grows when children are trusted to take appropriate risks and learn from experience.

Open-ended, nature-rich spaces offer endless possibilities, inviting imagination and creativity rather than prescribing how play should unfold.

Balancing protection with meaningful challenge, the play space is intentionally designed to foster resilience and contribute to the development of confident, capable young people.
