Nick’s Message: As We Are

Reflection by Anna Haycock, Year 11

I was in Grade 4 when I first heard the story of Nick Vujicic. I remember how his message about his life and his love and faith in God really inspired me, and how his differences and the challenges he faced growing up helped shape him into the man that he is today.

On the last day of Week of Worship, Nick came to BAC as a guest speaker. Of course, I was very eager to hear what he had to say — and I was not disappointed. Nick’s focal statement was that “God can use anyone, it doesn’t matter who you are”, and this fit perfectly with the theme of WOW, which was Chosen.

Growing up, Nick was bullied. At 10 years old, he wanted to end his life. He felt hopeless, wondering where God was. But God had a plan for his life, and He does for ours too.

Nick shared that when he was young, he would always ask God for legs and arms. He told us that we always feel like we need something more, but that what we want isn’t always what we need. Happiness in fulfilling our wants is temporary, but instead, God takes us as we are and gives us what we need to fulfil the purpose that He has for us. We are ambassadors for Christ.

Nick’s stories and messages were so touching, and I related to his spiritual journey. As a teen growing up in a fast-paced society, it’s easy to get lost and feel worthless. Nick reminded us that no sin can ever separate us from God’s love. He is calling us now, and doesn’t want to wait for us to be perfect because it will never happen — and He doesn’t need that. Instead we should ask God to redirect our lives to live and serve as his treasured sons and daughters, no matter our faults and our differences. God loves us all the same, and to me I think that is beautiful.
