Exclusive performance by BAC Alumni and The Steele Syndicate lead Steele McMahon

We are pleased to announce that Steele McMahon from Brisbane-based octet The Steele Syndicate will be playing two sets from 4:30 pm this Sunday in a rare solo performance at the Twilight Markets & Carols by Candlelight. With the simplicity of guitar and voice, he will be throwing out a mix of classic hits, cool funk and folk covers and awesome originals on The Green for anyone who wants to just sit back and take in the cool vibe.

A BAC graduate, Steele began his double degree in laws/economics and music at the University of Queensland in 2013. It was in those early days at UQ that he formed a band with fellow students and friends to compete in a university competition. Ever since, The Steele Syndicate has been developing their own eclectic, genre-blending sound that reimagines elements of old school funk, reggae, ska and indie rock, backed up by rich vocal harmonies and a roaring four-piece horn section. In 2017, they won the Gig on the Green Award presented by The QUBE Effect (Brisbane City Council); in 2016 they won Sigma Stockies Band Competition at the Stock Exchange Hotel; and in 2015 they won The Brightside Homegrown Battle of the Bands. The Steele Syndicate released their debut EP Antipodes in 2016 with lead single Where I Need to Be, and most recent EP Sedona in 2018, touring the east coast of Australia, including the Sydney Opera House.

Now working as a solicitor for Thomson Geer Lawyers in Brisbane’s CBD, Steele says that music will always be a part of his life. There will always be time for playing and performing and he plans to move into entertainment law in years to come.

His music roots go deep—way back to when he first joined the BAC Primary worship band in 2006!

“There were always great opportunities to perform at BAC and a supportive community, which really helps.”

While in Year 11 and 12, Steele studied Music and Music Extension, specialising in composition and achieving top results with the support of music teachers Belinda Irving and Krysten Rowe. Steele writes all of the songs The Steele Syndicate performs.

“I had a great time at school. It’s always nice to come back and check out how it’s looking—see some familiar faces,” says Steele.

Steele’s sets will be from 4:30 to 5 pm and 5:30 to 6 pm. Bring your blanket to the Green for the best vibe in town!
