Orlando: Songwriter, Lyricist and the WOW Music Team

Year 12 student Orlando Pule has been singing with his mum, dad, brother Darius and sisters Faith and Bronte at church and leading out in worship bands for quite a while. So long, in fact, that it took him a moment to remember when it all started.

“Maybe I was 11 or 12…?” he guessed. It’s clear that music is and has always been a huge part of Orlando’s life. Mrs Pule also plays piano, Darius and Bronte Pule are learning piano, and Orlando plays guitar and drums.

Orlando was inspired to write a song after hearing that ‘Chosen’ was the theme for this year's weeks of spiritual emphasis (WOW) for both Primary and Secondary students (separate programs).

“I wrote Chosen at the beginning of Term 1, but it wasn’t really meant for WOW. It wasn’t really for anything. I just really liked the theme.”

When Orlando played his song for College chaplains JP and Annalise, they asked if they could use it as the theme song for the special program of spiritual emphasis this past week. It’s caught on and will more than likely become a regular for school chapels because of its upbeat, heartfelt lyrics and the riff that students “can really get into” as Orlando puts it.

Some time later, Orlando was also asked to be music leader (we call it 'worship leading') for the week of spiritual emphasis. This requires a high degree of skill, but with his experience over the years, Orlando felt equipped to do the job. He spent many hours in what little free time he has as a Year 12 student organising and directing the musical side of the program with the help of fellow student leader Sarah Colquhoun. “When they asked me, I instantly felt that I had to say yes,” he reflects.

Music leading for WOW requires a careful curation process: finding the right mix of singers, the right songs, the right instruments to complement the songs, and the right key to suit everyone.

When your job is to lead a few hundred self-conscious teenagers in singing, it can be a tough gig! But this week, the team’s hard work and dedication has paid off.

“When you put a lot of effort in and do something right, it’s a really nice to step back a moment and observe how it’s going. The music has gone through the roof. We didn’t expect it. It’s been a great week. My song has gone really well. It seems to really hit you in the core.”
