What skills will our children need for the 21st Century?
Have you ever wondered what the world our children will live in as adults will look like? They are predicted to live shorter life spans but work into their 70s. Researchers predict that they will change jobs every 3 to 6 years, and will travel significantly more than previous generations. They will live in a world where information growth is exponential and there will be an accelerating shift in emphasis, driven by the exponential rise in the power and capacity of technology over the last 25 years, away from valuing detailed factual knowledge and towards a new set of literacies – discrimination, teamwork, collaboration, knowledge creation, problem solving and probably most vitally, innovative thinking.
At Brisbane Adventist College, eLearning has come of age – it enables us to create the environment and context for students to work collaboratively, to share their understandings and insight with each other and to confront problems and situations with the confidence to analyse and resolve issues creatively.
With your support and trust, I truly believe that we can completely revolutionise the direction, support and guidance we give to our young people through the process of education – and set them on an empowered track to be major owners of their own destiny and to be equipped with the skills, attitudes and confidence to fully engage with the 21st Century world within which they will work, live, laugh and play for very many years to come.
